Choi Si-won of Super Junior Faces Backlash Over Political Comments, Sparks Debate on Threads
Choi Si-won (崔始源), a member of K-pop group Super Junior and an actor, has drawn significant attention for publicly expressing support for a protest demanding a rerun of the June 3 local elections. While many netizens interpreted his actions as an indirect endorsement of the demonstration, others argued that his political stance could not be definitively determined solely by emojis, fueling ongoing debate.
According to South Korean media reports, on June 22, Choi posted three South Korean flag emojis in the comments section of a Threads video showing the area around the Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium in Seoul's Songpa District. Given his recent frequent posts related to national and social issues, this comment was quickly interpreted by many as a potential show of support for the protest.

He stated, "Enhancing public trust in elections, regardless of political affiliation, is not for any single party but for the democracy of the entire Republic of Korea. Only by ensuring that the public trusts the electoral system, and that every precious vote is accurately reflected, must all electoral procedures be managed transparently and rigorously."
Choi further noted that those who braved the wind and rain to voice their concerns on the streets that day were citizens striving to protect South Korean democracy and the value of every vote. He emphasized his hope that their sincerity and efforts would not be unfairly labeled, trivialized, or slandered under any circumstances, thereby openly expressing his support for the demonstration.
The crowd gathered around Olympic Park that day was reportedly protesting recent election results, demanding a rerun and questioning the integrity of the electoral process. As celebrities' social media statements are often heavily scrutinized, Choi's comment quickly became a focal point online.
