K-Reality TV Couple Under Fire for 'Fake' On-Screen Conflict, Drawing Host Lee Hyo-ri into Controversy

年糕歐巴7/23/2026 1 min read

Shim Gyu-deok (심규덕) and Lee Ah-young (이아영), a couple who met on MBN's dating reality show Dolsingglz (돌싱글즈) and are set to remarry, have sparked controversy following their appearance on JTBC's relationship observation program Love War. The couple was seen engaging in heated arguments and constant conflict on the show. However, just one day before the episode aired, they launched a YouTube channel and stated, “Actually, we have a great relationship.” This led to accusations of deliberately fabricating drama for publicity, deceiving both the show and its viewers, and placing host Lee Hyo-ri (이효리) in an awkward position.

In the October 21 episode of JTBC's Love War, Shim Gyu-deok and Lee Ah-young appeared as a couple preparing for remarriage. During the show, Shim Gyu-deok repeatedly criticized Lee Ah-young's spending habits, including purchasing a luxury hair accessory for 400,000 won and spending 2 million won on body management. However, he admitted to spending 4 to 5 million won monthly on his own fitness, drawing criticism for his double standards.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Shim Gyu-deok continued to use a bed he shared with his ex-wife and even requested a counterfeit wedding ring. He also made demeaning comments to Lee Ah-young, such as, “I paid for it, so just say thank you and wear it,” and “What if the child looks like your head?” His domineering and disrespectful attitude shocked those present on set.

Instagram

Even host Seo Jang-hoon (서장훈) couldn't help but confront Shim Gyu-deok on the spot, asking, “How much money do you even make to be so arrogant?” and “How can you say such terrible things so casually?” This highlighted the extremely tense relationship between the couple on the show.

However, the real controversy wasn't the content of the episode itself, but the couple's actions the day before it aired.

Kim Hye-jun Says Her 'Ordinary Face' Is Key to Landing Diverse Roles

Actress Kim Hye-jun recently shared that her 'ordinary' appearance has become an unexpected advantage in her career, helping her secure roles in various genre productions.

On October 20, the couple preemptively launched a YouTube channel titled Your Fault, My Fault (니덕내탓) and uploaded their first video, announcing they would share their daily lives. In the video, they displayed affectionate interactions, with Shim Gyu-deok directly stating, “We were like that on Love War, but actually, we have a great relationship.” Lee Ah-young echoed his sentiment, adding, “It's because we have a good relationship that we're getting married.”

These statements directly contradicted the intense conflicts portrayed on the show, leading many viewers to question whether the on-screen disagreements were deliberately staged to create buzz.

The revelation also put Lee Hyo-ri, a host of Love War, in a highly awkward position. At the show's production press conference, she had addressed skepticism about the authenticity of dating reality shows, stating that while she initially wondered if guests were just seeking fame, she found during filming that every couple genuinely came with their problems.

Lee Hyo-ri emphasized at the time, “I hate fake things.” She even revealed that some couples genuinely broke up during filming, using this to vouch for the show's authenticity.

Instagram

However, Shim Gyu-deok and Lee Ah-young's pre-broadcast announcement on their YouTube channel, emphasizing their “great relationship,” instantly undermined Lee Hyo-ri's previous statements about the show's authenticity and was seen as exposing the show's manufactured drama.

Following the video's release, numerous netizens flooded the comments section with criticism: “They said their relationship was great before the show even aired; they're clearly deceiving viewers.” “The most innocent ones are Lee Hyo-ri and the production team, who kept emphasizing the show's authenticity.” “So, did they appear on the show just to promote their YouTube channel and gain exposure?”

Korean media outlets also directly stated that by prioritizing their personal fame and channel promotion over the show's content, the couple not only eroded the program's credibility but also plunged dating reality shows, which should be based on genuine emotions and struggles, back into questions of being “staged” and “acting.”
