Heo Young Family's Pro-Japanese, Wealth-Flaunting Controversy Escalates; Korean Media Calls for 'Boundaries to Criticism' Amid Public Outcry

江南美人8/21/2026 1 min read

Korean actress Heo Young (허영) has recently been embroiled in controversy over her great-grandfather Ahn Sang-ho's (안상호) alleged pro-Japanese activities. As the scandal continues to escalate, past controversies involving her grandfather and her mother's previous remarks about having "200 million won in a safe" have also resurfaced. Despite Heo Young publicly issuing a handwritten apology and acknowledging her oversight, the uproar has not subsided. Instead, criticism has expanded from her past statements and actions to demands for her withdrawal from new dramas, with some even calling for a complete ban on her entertainment activities, leaving production teams and broadcasters in a difficult position.

Recent Korean media reports indicate that in addition to her advertisements being made private and reruns of her variety show appearances being edited out, there are growing calls for her to withdraw from her upcoming lead roles in SBS's new drama, 'Victory is Hope,' and the second season of the Netflix original series, 'Trauma Center: D-Day.'

'Victory is Hope,' an adaptation of the Japanese drama 'Legal High,' is currently in its pre-broadcast stage, with some parts of the production nearing completion. In this situation, demands for a lead actor change have not only sparked public discussion but also placed significant practical pressure on the production team.

However, the media commentary also pointed out that the catalyst for this controversy is indeed related to Heo Young herself. In the past, she frequently introduced her family background as a "four-generation doctor family" on variety shows and in media interviews, using her family history to build her personal image and public appeal. In the early stages of the controversy, her agency even denied related historical records, only to change its statement later, further intensifying public dissatisfaction.

The commentary argued that, without considering one's unchosen "lineage" as the problem itself, the public's disappointment and criticism of Heo Young for packaging her family history as a personal story on television without sufficient verification is not entirely unreasonable. Heo Young herself admitted in her handwritten apology her insufficient historical awareness and past imprudent remarks, formally apologizing to the public.

However, what truly sparked controversy is whether public opinion has gradually crossed a line post-apology. The commentary noted that some criticisms have now shifted from scrutinizing Heo Young's past statements to demanding her withdrawal from new dramas and even attempting to obstruct her acting career. Especially given that some productions are nearly 90% complete, demanding a lead actor change at this stage may no longer be mere public criticism but rather collective pressure that disregards the realities of the film and television industry.

The article emphasized that clarifying and evaluating ancestors' past historical actions and preventing their descendants from pursuing legitimate professions should be two different matters. If descendants were to suffer substantial social disadvantages solely due to their ancestors' mistakes, it would, to some extent, be no different from a "collective punishment" mindset.

An individual cannot choose their birth background, nor can they control what their ancestors did, and should not be deprived of the right to participate normally in social activities merely because of their ancestors' wrongdoings. This is precisely why historical research groups, including the Institute for Research in Collaborationist Activities, while confirming the historical fact of Heo Young's great-grandfather's involvement in pro-Japanese activities, have also drawn a line against indiscriminate attacks on Heo Young herself.

Instagram

Of course, if someone attempts to conceal their ancestors' history or even defend related actions, they should naturally face harsher criticism. However, Heo Young has now admitted her ignorance and mistakes and formally apologized publicly. In such a situation, if demands persist for her withdrawal from productions nearing completion, or even for a complete ban on her entertainment activities, it may no longer be reasonable public criticism but rather closer to personal revenge and labeling.

The commentary concluded by stating that while correcting historical facts and criticizing wrongdoings are necessary, if criticism further escalates to completely stripping an individual of their professional platform, its legitimacy becomes difficult to maintain. When confronting history, what should be pursued should be pursued; when confronting individuals, due boundaries should be maintained. More than endless exclusion and banning, society needs the restraint to know when criticism should stop.

However, after this Korean media commentary was published, its content quickly topped Korean search trends and sparked intense debate on the Korean online forum theqoo. Contrary to the article's assertion that "criticism should have boundaries," many Korean netizens did not buy it and instead grew angrier, leaving comments such as: "Pro-Japanese traitors have so much to say, where are these boundaries?" "You want us to maintain boundaries for traitors? Traitors didn't maintain boundaries for us, what kind of talk is this?" "Why do I need to care about traitors?" "What do you mean 'driven off the stage'? No one told them to die, they can live well even if they're not entertainers, why must they continue to be entertainers?"

"Stop making a fuss, just retire." "Will they die if they don't act?" "Why put traitors on stage?" "How many protective reports are there? Seriously, do we need to be so lenient with traitors? They're shameless and flaunt it everywhere, shouldn't they be labeled?" "Donate all your property and go to Japan." "Traitors should be labeled, shouldn't they?" "Their assets haven't been recovered, and an apology is supposed to make us accept it? Have they apologized to those who suffered because of pro-Japanese actions? This mindset is completely Japanese." "Is it wrong to label a traitor's family? Especially when they're shameless and arrogantly flaunt it, even boasting on TV about how glorious their family is, can't they have some shame? How dare they still want to do work that faces the public?" "If you understand history, it's impossible to criticize traitors with boundaries." "I don't care how pro-Japanese descendants live as long as I don't see them, but they're so brazenly coming out to earn public money and affection, it's infuriating. If they had reflected, it would be one thing." "It's already good enough that their family isn't driven out of Korea."

Some netizens also argued that Heo Young's criticism is not without reason: "She's not the only entertainer descendant of a pro-Japanese collaborator, so why target only Heo Young? At least other pro-Japanese descendants don't keep talking about their families, and her family isn't just pro-Japanese; if you line up traitors, her family would definitely be at the very front. How is such criticism excessive?" Others retorted: "Traitors and their families didn't maintain boundaries, so why are the harmed citizens being asked to maintain boundaries instead?"

Currently, this controversy has expanded from Heo Young's personal historical views and family background to a debate over whether descendants should bear the historical responsibility of their ancestors, and how to balance public criticism with an individual's right to pursue their profession.
