South Korean girl group ILLIT recently held an encore concert where member Wonhee (원희) was captured on video performing with a knee injury that bled throughout the show. The footage quickly went viral on social media, sparking a two-sided discussion: some praised her professional idol attitude, while others expressed concern for her injury, arguing that performing while hurt should not be encouraged.
ILLIT performed their 'PRESS START' encore concert on October 17 at INSPIRE ARENA in Yeongjongdo, Incheon, South Korea. During the performance, Wonhee seemingly injured her knee, which began to bleed. Despite this, she continued with the choreography, only applying a bandage to the wound when she had an opportunity to sit and rest later.
After the footage circulated online, many fans expressed their sympathy, leaving comments such as: “Wonhee, I hope everyone stays safe,” “I’m so worried about her, but she definitely doesn’t want to worry fans,” and “Wonhee truly has a professional idol attitude.” Fans were particularly touched to see fellow member Iroha (이로하) checking on Wonhee on stage, wishing all members health and safety.
However, some netizens were critical of fans' effusive praise for Wonhee, arguing that a simple knee scrape was being exaggerated. One user questioned, “If your friend scraped their knee and went about their day, would you praise them like this?” Others sarcastically remarked that fans were reacting as if her entire leg had been amputated during the concert, highlighting the differing opinions.
On the other hand, many also argued that the severity of the injury was not the main issue, but rather whether idols should be expected to continue performing while bleeding. One netizen stated bluntly, “Stop encouraging this behavior; they are human too.” They contended that even during a stage performance, the artists’ physical condition and safety should be prioritized, and professionalism should not equate to enduring pain.
Adding to some fans' concern is that this is not the only recent injury reported within ILLIT. Netizens recalled that Yunah (윤아) was previously said to have a neck injury, and Iroha reportedly experienced ankle discomfort. Now, with Wonhee's bleeding knee, the string of incidents led fans to plead, “Yunah’s neck, Iroha’s ankle, and now Wonhee’s knee? Please, Minju (민주) must stay safe!”
Wonhee's performance with an injury has once again brought attention to the physical demands placed on idols behind the stage. While professionalism is commendable to fans, some believe that ensuring members can work safely and preventing injuries from becoming an expected part of their careers is more important than praising idols for enduring pain to perform.
