Korean singer IU (아이유) has released new music after a year-long hiatus, and this time, the project features a special recipient: actress Yoo In-na (유인나), her friend of over 15 years. The two have long been known as "super best friends" in the entertainment industry, with Yoo In-na consistently serving as a muse for IU's music. Now, IU has once again woven their deep friendship into a song, even explicitly stating "Dedicated to Yoo In-na" in the new track's description. Even the prisoner number in the music video holds a special meaning related to their bond, leading fans to exclaim, "This friendship is so enviable."

IU released her new digital single, "Unknown Planet," on October 10 at 6 p.m. KST across various music platforms. This marks her first new release in approximately a year since "Bye, Summer" in September of last year. The single features two title tracks, "Unknown Planet" and "Dear my crazy soulmate," both penned by IU herself. Both songs are also slated for inclusion in her upcoming sixth full-length album.

Among the two, "Dear my crazy soulmate" has garnered the most attention. In the song's official description on streaming platforms, IU provided minimal text, simply stating: "Dedicated to Yoo In-na."

This song is more than just a dedication; its lyrics are filled with traces of their long-standing friendship. IU sings about accepting her friend's quirks and eccentricities, and wishing to stay by her side even if the world collapses, to help her smile again. As the title "crazy soulmate" suggests, the song portrays the deep emotional bond between the two, who, after years of seeing each other's true selves, still choose to remain by each other's side.

The music video also centers on the theme of "long-lasting friendship," featuring veteran actresses Kim Young-ok (김영옥) and Na Moon-hee (나문희) as two lifelong friends. The story depicts one friend going to extraordinary lengths, even entering prison, to reunite with the other on her birthday after circumstances prevent them from celebrating together. They eventually reconnect, with one working in the prison. Despite the passage of time, their profound bond is conveyed through their gazes and expressions, showcasing the unspoken understanding between old friends.

Notably, fans have also uncovered Easter eggs in the MV details related to IU and Yoo In-na. Kim Young-ok's prisoner uniform number in the drama is "2288." The number "2" is Yoo In-na's favorite, while "8" is IU's. It is known that February 22 and August 8 have previously been referred to as "In-na Day" and "Jieun Day" (IU's birth name), respectively. This seemingly ordinary number has been interpreted as a special hidden detail for the two, further delighting fans.

Beyond the music video, another intriguing coincidence has been discovered in the song itself. "Dear my crazy soulmate" has a total length of 2 minutes and 36 seconds. Some fans have noted that adding "2, 3, and 6" results in 11, which precisely matches the 11-year age difference between IU and Yoo In-na. This has led fans to wonder if the song's length also contains a hidden design. However, these interpretations are currently fan-discovered coincidences, and the agency has not confirmed any special meaning behind them.

This friendship has not only inspired song creation but also contributed to IU's impressive chart performance. After its release on October 10, "Unknown Planet" immediately topped Melon's HOT100, Genie's TOP200, and Bugs' real-time charts on the same day, also reaching second place on Melon's TOP100. "Dear my crazy soulmate" also performed strongly, securing second place on Melon's HOT100 and Bugs' real-time charts, and third place on Genie's TOP200.

The international performance was equally strong. As of 7 a.m. on October 11, "Unknown Planet" had reached No. 1 on iTunes Top Songs charts in Singapore and Taiwan, and No. 2 in Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, charting in a total of 16 countries and regions. "Dear my crazy soulmate" topped the iTunes Top Songs chart in Sri Lanka and entered the charts in 9 countries and regions.

In fact, IU and Yoo In-na's friendship extends beyond their private lives; Yoo In-na has repeatedly appeared as a significant figure in IU's musical world.

The two first met in 2010 through the SBS variety show "Heroes" and have maintained their friendship for over 15 years. Besides traveling together and sending food trucks to each other's filming sets, they have always been there for each other during difficult times, with their deep bond frequently becoming a topic of discussion.

Yoo In-na has also been a source of inspiration for many of IU's songs, with one notable example being "You" (너). IU composed this song in 2016 while filming the SBS drama "Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo," feeling a longing for her friend while they were separated.

When Yoo In-na appeared on IU's YouTube show "IU's Palette" in 2023, she spoke about the song again, describing it as a track she would cherish for a lifetime and hold in the most important place in her heart.

Another song, "Drama," also originated from Yoo In-na. Although this song was only included in IU's special mini-album "Pieces" in 2021, it was actually completed back in 2014. There's a special story behind it: at the time, Yoo In-na shared her romantic troubles and experiences with IU at a cafe. IU then drew inspiration from her friend's personal stories to create "Drama." Yoo In-na later revealed that her love story was almost verbatim transformed into the song's lyrics, and IU herself confirmed that it was "a song written for Yoo In-na."

IU has even revealed that she often uses Yoo In-na as an "imaginary protagonist" when writing songs. On "IU's Palette" in 2023, she stated that when she needs to define a character for a song, she often bases it on Yoo In-na because her friend is emotionally rich and highly expressive, making her perfect for song lyrics.

Yoo In-na also shared that IU frequently asks her how she would feel in specific situations. The long-standing conversations and emotional exchanges between them clearly demonstrate the profound influence of this friendship on IU's creative process.

Now, approximately 10 years later, IU has once again written Yoo In-na into her musical world. From composing "You" in 2016 out of longing for her friend, to writing "Drama" inspired by her friend's love stories, and now explicitly dedicating "Dear my crazy soulmate" to Yoo In-na in 2026, this friendship of over 15 years has become a significant emotional thread in IU's musical career.

After the new song's release, Korean netizens flooded comment sections, expressing their admiration for the duo's deep friendship. Some exclaimed, "If this isn't love, what is?" and "Wow, is this a marriage proposal?" Others commented, "I'm so envious of having a soulmate like that" and "Girls' friendships are truly beautiful." Many also shared, "I teared up reading the lyrics" and "I wish I had someone like In-na unnie."

Fans also recalled that during IU's past concert tours in Korea, Yoo In-na attended almost every show despite her own personal commitments and difficulties, highlighting the depth of their bond. Some sentimentally remarked, "Regardless of gender, it's truly a blessing to have a soulmate who understands you so well in life."

Some netizens even jokingly said they "wouldn't be surprised if they got married," while others were moved, stating, "The lyrics made me cry, the MV made me cry, I'm truly so envious."

This new song by IU not only continues their over 15-year friendship but also fully showcases this rare bond through the song, its music video, and hidden details. From past longing and shared love stories to the current unreserved dedication of "Dedicated to Yoo In-na," this 15-year "best friendship" continues to write new chapters in IU's music.
