THE BOYZ's Kevin Slams K-Pop Industry: "Fans Are Just a Means to an End"
Kevin (케빈) of K-pop group THE BOYZ has recently expressed significant dissatisfaction with the K-pop industry. As he prepares to release solo work, he has uncharacteristically spoken out about the current state of the industry, criticizing K-pop for having "lost its direction." He further asserted that 99% of the industry operates on "thin ice," making a cryptic promise: "The day I spill all the insider details, it will be a sobering day for all of us."
On August 6, THE BOYZ announced they would continue as a nine-member group after departing from their former agency. Following this, members have gradually shifted focus to individual endeavors, with Kevin currently preparing for his solo debut.

While working on his solo music, Kevin seemingly felt compelled to share his candid thoughts on K-pop and the industry's ecosystem on social media. He first mentioned hoping fans would experience a more authentic and unreserved side of him through his new album, admitting he has always been uncomfortable with fans being forced into the industry's commercial model. "I hope K-pop fans can feel a breath of fresh air through the honesty of this album," he stated.
Kevin wrote that he has always been troubled by the fact that despite having "the most dedicated fans in the world," he could only continually feed them "repackaged trends." He expressed gratitude for the many memories created with fans but maintained his inability to accept fans being "treated merely as part of a business model, with no other meaning."
He further elaborated on his disappointment with the K-pop industry, stating that being able to create music more genuinely now is a source of joy for him. Kevin explained that he spent too much time feeling upset about these issues in the past and has finally decided to create based on musical inspiration and conviction. He believes music is inherently subjective, but for him, the only constant standard is "sincerity."
He also mentioned that while he did share genuine and happy moments with fans in the past, witnessing some of the "ugly intentions" behind the scenes further fueled his motivation to create. "I don't resent my journey because everything that happened ultimately led me to where I am now," he said.
Kevin also urged K-pop fans worldwide to be more discerning when engaging with music and to support works that embody healthier creative philosophies.
Regarding his upcoming solo work, he emphasized that it would be different from his past endeavors, not "different for the sake of being different," but rather choosing the method best suited to convey his message. He directly stated, "This work might step on some people's toes, but I believe artists should be the least cautious people in the world." However, in his view, the reality is quite the opposite, with "99% of the industry built on thin ice."
Kevin later discussed more issues in his social media threads, even directly stating that K-pop "has lost its direction" and referencing long-debated problems like cultural appropriation.
His most attention-grabbing statement was: "However, the day I spill all the insider details, haha, that will be a sobering day for all of us." This cryptic remark quickly sparked discussion among netizens, with many K-pop fans agreeing, particularly resonating with his views on cultural appropriation and industry issues.
Some netizens directly commented that it is "extremely significant" for an idol to openly point out these problems and urged others concerned about K-pop industry malpractices to support Kevin's new album, believing that those who truly want to see industry change should support those willing to speak out.
Others jokingly suggested arranging a podcast featuring THE BOYZ's Kevin and Vernon (버논) of SEVENTEEN to discuss their views on the current state of the K-pop industry.
Another K-pop fan commented that most people are aware that a massive capital and commercial system has formed behind K-pop, and that fans are sometimes just numbers and revenue in the eyes of corporations. However, the industry still has many musicians who genuinely love music and strive to create when given the opportunity.
Kevin's remarks have once again ignited public discussion: as K-pop increasingly becomes a highly commercialized global industry, how much space truly remains for "music" itself, considering artists' creative autonomy, fan culture, cultural appropriation, and industry operational models?
