Kim Min's 'I Live Alone' Appearance Boosts Ratings, Sparks "Staged" Controversy

MBC's long-running variety show “I Live Alone” (나 혼자 산다), which has seen its ratings steadily decline to recent lows, has been under considerable pressure. Beyond its low viewership, a previous segment featuring host Jun Hyun-moo (전현무)'s “impromptu trip” also faced production controversy, with questions raised about whether parts of it were pre-arranged. Now, the show has invited actor Kim Min (김민) to share his 28 years of single life, unexpectedly generating buzz and a noticeable rebound in ratings.

Kim Min recently showcased his life in a roughly 90-year-old house in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province, on the show. His unvarnished lifestyle—from operating a generator and patching old floors with cement to building a wood fire for grilling meat—sparked heated discussion.

After the episode aired, nationwide ratings surged to 6.0%, a significant 2.5 percentage point increase from the previous week's Episode 666, which recorded 3.5%. Related clips also garnered millions of views on YouTube, making Kim Min a clear “topic savior” for the show. However, as the episode gained popularity, another wave of discussion followed. Some Korean netizens began to question whether Kim Min's old house lifestyle was pre-arranged, even suggesting that the show might have deliberately tidied up the house's surroundings for filming.

One netizen compared a street view image labeled “July 2026” with scenes from the show, noting that the previously overgrown garden appeared to have been visibly tidied. A space enclosed by fabric also appeared on site, leading to suspicions that the house might have been specially arranged for the program's filming.

The most controversial point was Kim Min's use of a generator for electricity on the show. Some netizens argued that utility poles were visible nearby, and the house contained appliances like a refrigerator and audio system, and even what appeared to be a router or set-top box. Given this, why would he rely on a generator instead of conventional electricity?

As the discussion intensified, a netizen claiming to be a “Korea Electric Power Corporation (한국전력공사) field worker” offered an alternative explanation in the comments section of a related video.

The netizen stated that, based on the program's footage, the house likely had an existing power line connection and the meter box was still present, but no actual electricity meter was visible inside. They speculated that the house might have previously had power, but due to long-term disuse, the original user had applied to terminate the electricity contract and had the meter removed.

In other words, although utility poles and wires are still visible outside the house, it doesn't mean there is currently normal power supply. If the homeowner hasn't reapplied for electricity, the house naturally cannot use conventional power directly, which is why Kim Min would opt for a generator.

This explanation offered a different perspective on the initial question of “why use a generator when there are utility poles?” However, as the actual identity of the netizen and the current electricity contract status of the house have not been confirmed, this explanation remains only a possibility for now.

Beyond the generator controversy, another netizen recently shared a photo of an unexpected encounter with Kim Min, unexpectedly leading to a new twist in the “program setup” debate.

A netizen revealed that while traveling in Jeju Island recently, they unexpectedly ran into actors from the “A Shop for Killers” (킬러들의 쇼핑몰) crew and shared a photo. The picture showed Kim Min, Jo Han-sun (조한선), and Justin Harvey, among others, who had all appeared together in “A Shop for Killers 2.” They appeared to be having dinner at a sashimi restaurant in Jeju Island that day.

Kim Min remained the most eye-catching. He was seen wearing a leopard-print headscarf and, surprisingly, the same light blue, flamboyant bathrobe and uniquely patterned trousers that appeared in “I Live Alone.” His overall styling was almost identical.

After the photo was revealed, many netizens exclaimed, “So, he wasn't acting on the show after all!” They believed that this private encounter seemed to prove that Kim Min's attire and lifestyle on the show were indeed likely his usual appearance, once again captivating many with his unique charm.

In recent years, Kim Min has been active in domestic and international film and television productions, gaining more attention for his role as “John” in the Disney+ series “King of Savvy” (카지노). He subsequently appeared in films like “The Roundup: No Way Out” (범죄도시3) and “Smugglers” (밀수), as well as Netflix's “Black Knight” (택배기사) and “Song of the Bandits” (도적: 칼의 소리), and Disney+'s “A Shop for Killers.” With his distinctive appearance and strong character charisma, he has left a deep impression in various works.

Now, having become a trending topic thanks to “I Live Alone,” Kim Min has not only brought back viewership to the show but also made his authentic lifestyle a hot topic of discussion among Korean netizens.
