Lee Chae-young (이채영), a member of the K-pop girl group fromis_9, recently recounted an incredibly awkward incident during an overseas trip. Her strong regional dialect was so 'fiery' that local residents mistook her conversation with family for a heated argument, leading them to call the police, who promptly arrived on the scene.
During the JTBC variety show 'Knowing Bros' (아는 형님), which aired on the 26th, Lee Chae-young, who hails from Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, discussed her unique way of speaking. She laughed as she explained that it wasn't until she moved to Seoul that she realized her accent 'sounded like she was looking for a fight,' often causing misunderstandings among those around her.
Lee Chae-young revealed that if someone were to ask her, 'Have you eaten yet?' she might respond directly with something like, 'What else would I be doing at this hour if not eating?' She was surprised to learn that this natural way of speaking, to her, initially made her bandmates feel 'a little scared.'
Even more astonishing, her strong Pohang dialect once led to a misunderstanding that involved the police during an overseas trip. Lee Chae-young explained that while traveling abroad with her family, she was simply chatting as usual with her uncle and grandfather. Unbeknownst to them, local residents overheard their conversation and mistakenly believed the family was engaged in a fierce argument, prompting them to call the police.
Due to the intense tone of her speech, police rushed to the scene after receiving the report from residents. They soon discovered there was no family conflict at all; it was just Lee Chae-young's family having a normal conversation, turning the entire incident into a bewildering and humorous misunderstanding.
Lee Chae-young also shared several amusing anecdotes from when she first moved from Pohang to Seoul and struggled to adapt to the Seoul accent. Even when ordering at a cafe, she found the menu item pronunciations completely different from what she was used to, leading her to exclaim, 'When will I ever remember all these different tones?' Her stories brought continuous laughter to the set, allowing viewers to once again appreciate the interesting differences between regional dialects.
