A Fateful Romance Amidst War: An In-Depth Look at 'My Dearest'
'My Dearest' is set during the Joseon Dynasty (조선 시대) amidst war, telling the fateful love story between Lee Jang-hyun (Namkoong Min 남궁민), a man with a tragic past who has no desire to marry, and Yoo Gil-chae (Ahn Eun-jin 안은진), a naive yet charming noblewoman from a yangban (양반, traditional ruling class) family. According to the Kdrama Kisses review, actor Namkoong Min received high praise for his portrayal of the mysterious and ill-reputed Lee Jang-hyun, delivering 'intense immersion' and expressing 'every emotion from happiness to sadness, anger, and love' through his eyes and subtle facial expressions. Actress Ahn Eun-jin added 'lovable charm' to her role as the popular, pampered, yet kind and appealing Yoo Gil-chae.
The drama powerfully depicts the numerous partings and reunions experienced by Lee Jang-hyun and Yoo Gil-chae as their lives are completely upended by war. The review noted that while their relationship had an 'epic feel,' its excessive reliance on 'misunderstandings and lack of communication' was a minor drawback. However, it added that this could be excused given the characters' personalities and the extreme circumstances.
The production quality of the series received high marks. Kdrama Kisses described 'My Dearest' as "an amazingly well-made drama in every aspect," highlighting its "excellent production with gorgeous cinematography" and "fantastic cast delivering wondrous performances." It also explained that the "complex and multifaceted story" encompassing "drama, tension, emotion, romance, and action" unfolds over many years and crosses borders. Additionally, the rich storylines of supporting characters like Gyeong Eun-ae (Lee Da-in 이다인), Nam Yeon-jun (Lee Hak-joo 이학주), and Ryang Eum (Kim Yoon-woo 김윤우) also contributed to the immersive experience. The characters' unwavering hope amidst the horrors of war deeply moved viewers.
