South Korean actor Yoo Yeon-seok (柳演錫) recently revealed the surprising origin of his stage name. The familiar 'Yoo Yeon-seok' is not his birth name; he was born Ahn Yeon-seok (安演錫). To retain the name his friends and family had always called him, he decided to only change his surname. However, he seriously considered 'Jo Yeon-seok' (趙演錫) and 'Joo Yeon-seok' (朱演錫) before settling on his current stage name.
On May 26, Yoo Yeon-seok released a new video on his YouTube channel, 'Yoo Yeon-seok's Weekend Yeon-seok-geuk' (柳演錫의 주말연석극), titled 'Two People Who Sneaked Into Your Heart.' During a chat with actors Kim Ji-yeon (金知妍) and Park Seo-ham (朴栖含), who appeared in the drama 'Dive to You,' the conversation naturally turned to their names, leading Yoo Yeon-seok to share his own stage name story.
The discussion began with Park Seo-ham's name. Park revealed that his current name is a changed name; he used 'Park Seung-jun' (朴承俊) during his idol days, and his birth name, given by his grandfather, was 'Park Kyung-bok' (朴慶福). Hearing this, Yoo Yeon-seok chuckled, saying, "That's so cute. You must have been teased a lot as a child."
As the conversation continued, Yoo Yeon-seok unexpectedly began talking about his own name. "Actually, I also changed my surname," he revealed. "It was for my stage name." He then disclosed his birth name: "My birth name is Ahn Yeon-seok." It turns out that the 'Yoo Yeon-seok' familiar to the public for years is not his birth name, but the stage name he adopted after his official debut.
However, Yoo Yeon-seok did not change the given name 'Yeon-seok,' only his surname. He explained, "I just didn't want to change the name everyone called me." Rather than adopting an entirely new name, he chose to keep 'Yeon-seok,' which he had been known by since childhood, and simply selected a new surname suitable for an actor.
The first surname he considered was surprisingly his mother's surname, 'Jo.' Yoo Yeon-seok shared, "Because my mother's surname is Jo, I thought about whether I should be called Jo Yeon-seok."
However, he quickly dismissed this name for a rather amusing reason. The pronunciation of 'Jo Yeon-seok' (조연석) contains 'Jo Yeon' (조연), which is homophonous with the Korean word for 'supporting role' or 'assistant actor.' He worried that if he became an actor, he might genuinely end up only playing supporting roles, turning his name into a kind of 'prophecy.' Thus, he ultimately did not adopt it.
Next, he considered 'Joo Yeon-seok' (朱演錫), because 'Joo Yeon' (주연) is also homophonous with the Korean word for 'lead role.' However, Yoo Yeon-seok, who was only 25 and just starting in the entertainment industry at the time, was hesitant about this name too. He recalled, "At the time, I thought, if I'm going to choose a name, why not 'lead role'? But I was only 25 then, I didn't know anything, I was a complete rookie."
He admitted, "I even worried, 'What if I can't play a lead role, but my name is 'Joo Yeon' (lead role)? Wouldn't that be embarrassing?'" After much deliberation, the name 'Yoo Yeon-seok,' familiar to everyone today, was finally born.
As for why he ultimately chose the surname 'Yoo' (柳), Yoo Yeon-seok revealed that he particularly liked concepts like 'softness' and 'flexibility' at the time, and wanted his name to convey a sense of 'resilience.' He explained with a laugh, "I thought at the time that actors should be flexible and maintain softness, so I chose the name 'Yoo Yeon-seok.'"
It's surprising that a name that has accompanied him throughout his long acting career hides such an amusing backstory, almost being 'Jo Yeon-seok' or 'Joo Yeon-seok.' This revelation has given fans new insight into the popular actor.
