[K-Beauty Japan] eBay Japan Targets Untapped Japanese E-commerce Market with Shibuya 'Sample House'

K-Beauty is experiencing a 'second golden age,' diversifying its global expansion strategies. Especially in the Japanese market, it's finding new breakthroughs and expanding its reach with local consumers through an O2O (Online to Offline) strategy that links offline experiences with online purchases.

According to a ChosunBiz report from September 2, the K-mask pack market has already entered its 'second golden age.' In response, ODM (Original Development Manufacturing) companies are increasing production capacity to meet rising demand. Domestic brands are also actively seeking innovative product development and expanding overseas sales channels, strengthening their global competitiveness.

As a core part of this global expansion strategy, eBay Japan (이베이재팬) permanently opened 'Sample House,' a K-Beauty experience space, in Tokyo's bustling Shibuya district on October 1, 2026. According to a Yonhap News report, this two-story, 120-pyeong (approximately 4,260 sq ft) space allows visitors to directly experience products from around 100 brands, including popular K-Beauty brands in Japan like Anua, Medicube, and COSRX. Notably, about 90% of the products are K-Beauty items. Visitors can receive recommendations for cosmetics tailored to their skin concerns and get seven types of samples for free. A conveyor belt system adds a fun element to the sample collection process. The venue can accommodate up to 700 visitors per day, or 20,000 per month, and has already garnered an enthusiastic response, with two weeks' worth of reservations fully booked. eBay Japan plans to implement a seasonal system, changing participating brands and products every three months.

Japan Market Characteristics and O2O Strategy

eBay Japan's 'Sample House' strategy directly targets the unique environment of the Japanese e-commerce market. Japan remains largely an offline-centric market, with e-commerce accounting for only 10% of the total market. According to Yonhap News, eBay Japan conceived 'Sample House' recognizing that Japanese consumers find it difficult to experience K-Beauty products offline, and are hesitant to order unfamiliar products online. The goal is to achieve an O2O (Online to Offline) synergy effect: customers can experience products without pressure, while K-Beauty brands gain honest reviews from local consumers and expand their reach.

Kim Jaedon (김재돈), CMO Marketing Director at eBay Japan, stated, "Sample House is a space where the value of a brand, which is difficult to fully convey online, can be directly experienced. It will also be an important hub for brands to quickly gauge customer reactions and create new growth opportunities." Qoo10 Japan (큐텐재팬), the online e-commerce platform operated by eBay Japan, boasts 30 million members, with 71% of them in their teens to thirties. Qoo10 Japan holds a 30% share of Japan's beauty e-commerce market and is also strengthening its online capabilities, including live commerce broadcasts and the expansion of its dedicated studio, 'Qoo10 Live Studio.' This is interpreted as a strategy to maximize traffic to the online platform through offline experiences.

Diversifying K-Beauty's Global Expansion

In addition to innovative ventures in the Japanese market, K-Beauty brands are also actively moving into other major markets. For example, the K-Beauty brand Brandino (브랜디노) recently held business meetings with 14 U.S. buyers, establishing a bridgehead for its entry into the North American market. According to an OpenPR report, Brandino plans to accelerate its global expansion based on these achievements by participating in the Hong Kong Mega Show in October 2026 and CES Eureka Park in 2027. This demonstrates K-Beauty's efforts to diversify its sales channels globally beyond specific regions and showcase its technological prowess and innovation.

K-Beauty's Global Leap with Localization Strategies

K-Beauty is moving beyond simple product sales, solidifying its position in the global market with localized approaches like the O2O strategy, which taps into the offline-centric consumer habits of the Japanese market. Starting with 'Sample House,' eBay Japan has announced aggressive expansion plans, including a Harajuku mega pop-up in November 2026 and the opening of a large flagship store in 2027. Combined with the increased technological capabilities of mask pack ODM companies and brands' efforts to innovate products and expand sales channels, K-Beauty's overseas expansion is expected to accelerate even further in the future.
