HAHA Laments Low Concert Ticket Sales Despite High Recognition: 'Famous But Not Popular'
Korean entertainer HAHA (하하) recently appeared on the variety show “Radio Star,” where he openly discussed his upcoming first solo fan concert. He surprisingly revealed that only about half the seats for the Seoul show have been sold, admitting that despite his high recognition in the entertainment industry, his actual popularity doesn't align with it. He also joked that he didn't want to rely on Yu Jae-seok (유재석) even for his solo concert, to avoid being criticized for “always leeching off Yu Jae-seok.”
The MBC program “Radio Star,” which aired on the 19th, featured HAHA as a guest under the theme “Turns out I'm not dead yet, hehe,” where he candidly spoke about his life in entertainment. During the show, Kim Gook-jin (김국진) playfully asked HAHA if he was hosting a large “neighborhood gathering.” HAHA laughed and revealed that it was actually his first fan concert as the main act since his debut, scheduled for August 22 in Busan and September 13 in Seoul.
However, when discussing ticket sales, HAHA admitted, “Busan is okay, but Seoul has a problem. The Seoul show is only about half full right now.” He explained that the concert planning company was surprised by the sales figures, which prompted him to quickly appear on “Radio Star” for promotion. Ticket prices are 110,000 Korean Won (approximately 2,500 New Taiwan Dollars).

Addressing the disparity between his recognition and actual popularity, HAHA candidly stated, “It's true I'm famous, but my popularity doesn't match my recognition.” He confessed that he hoped at least 2,000 fans would attend for him, adding with a laugh, “Given my career experience, it shouldn't be difficult.” A hint of disappointment was evident in his words.

HAHA, with 30 years of entertainment experience, even used social media data to analyze his popularity. He stated, “Two months ago, my Instagram had 3.8 million followers, but even with that, the concert can't fill 2,000 seats.”
Not only were the concert ticket sales disappointing, but HAHA also poked fun at the low viewership of his live streams. He said, “If 10% of my followers joined a live stream, there should be 300,000 people, right? But when I go live, there are only 400 people, about 0.01%.” HAHA then laughed, adding, “The comments don't increase either.” He revealed that about 390 people silently watched his streams, with only 10 actually commenting, making him lament how quiet his fans are.
Even more comically, HAHA joked that out of those 400 viewers, 10 were from the production team of “How Do You Play?” and another 20 were from “Running Man.” At this point, he couldn't help but quip, “How little does Yu Jae-seok think of me?!”

Although HAHA has been active in variety shows for many years, often taking on roles to liven the atmosphere and support others, he frankly revealed his desire to be loved. “I want to be liked by everyone too,” HAHA stated, adding that he finds auxiliary roles in variety shows cool, but as a singer, he still hopes to stand center stage and be the true protagonist.

Finally, he admitted, “But if I'm viewed as a protagonist, isn't my current popularity still a bit lacking?” This self-deprecating yet sincere confession allowed HAHA to reveal his true feelings about popularity and audience support after years in the spotlight.
HAHA's candid remarks sparked discussion among Korean netizens. Many believe that “being recognized” and “being willing to pay for tickets to support” are two different things. They suggested that while HAHA is charming on variety shows, this popularity might not translate into ticket sales for him as a singer.
One netizen directly stated, “He's funny on variety shows, but when it comes to being willing to go to a concert to support him, that's indeed another matter.” Another commented, “There's a difference between liking someone because you have a good impression and being willing to spend time and money to see a performance.”
However, many others thought HAHA's current ticket sales weren't too bad. “It's still selling well; going to a concert is just a different thing,” and “Public goodwill and true fans are different,” were common sentiments.
Some netizens also brought up HAHA's past as a member of “Infinite Challenge,” suggesting that many viewers enjoyed the atmosphere of “everyone bickering and interacting together” on the show, rather than purely supporting HAHA as an individual. Comments like, “While HAHA himself is good, people might prefer to see them bicker together,” “This happens because they don't like singer HAHA,” and “He's a TV personality; watching his shows doesn't mean you're his fan,” were numerous.
Furthermore, some netizens believed that HAHA has cultivated an image as a variety show personality over the years, rather than a singer's fanbase. “He's popular as a variety show personality; if you see him as a singer, there's no special need to go to a concert.” Others analyzed that HAHA frequently appears on TV and YouTube, so audiences don't necessarily need to buy tickets to see him, which might reduce the motivation to attend a live performance.
Some even bluntly stated, “HAHA is funny, but I'm not interested in his music,” and “If HAHA held a talk show-style concert, it might be packed, but purely as a singer, the memorable songs are really few.”
However, some netizens argued that HAHA isn't entirely without a concert market; he just lacks a “core fanbase” that can actually translate into ticket sales. “Even variety show personalities can sell out concerts if they have a dedicated fanbase. HAHA just lacks that core fanbase.”
Others analyzed from a market perspective, “Even idol groups struggle to fill 2,000 seats these days. Is he overestimating his demand?”
The concert unexpectedly brought to light the disparity between HAHA's long-standing image as a “national variety show personality” and his identity as a singer.
