Former THE BOYZ Member Kevin Responds to Solo Album Sales Criticism with Poise
The K-pop industry places significant importance on physical album sales. Beyond fans' enthusiasm for collecting various versions of idol albums, record sales are often considered a key indicator of an artist's or group's popularity. Many artists have achieved impressive sales figures, with some even surpassing the million-mark.
Recently, however, a popular male idol garnered attention for the sales performance of his new album. Members of the boy group THE BOYZ (더보이즈), who debuted in December 2017, have been pursuing individual activities and careers since leaving their agency, ONE HUNDRED.

Among them, Kevin (케빈) recently launched his first solo work, “FREECHILD,” with the title track of the same name, officially embarking on his solo career.
According to Hanteo Chart statistics, “FREECHILD” has accumulated 1,275 sales to date, with only 2 copies sold on its second day of release. After these figures were revealed, along with some recent social media posts by Kevin that some netizens interpreted as a response to another group, discussions arose, leading to some mockery.
Facing external focus on sales numbers, Kevin appeared to respond in his own way. On June 6, he posted on social media, stating, “When you become a catalyst for the happiness of countless people, who cares about statistics?” He added that for him, bringing happiness to others is more important than simply pursuing numbers.
Kevin also wrote a message to all those striving, saying, “To everyone who is struggling, I hope and pray to be a testament that it is absolutely necessary to persevere and continue to create art.”
He continued to post several encouraging messages, emphasizing his hope that his music and creations would empower others, showcasing an attitude that refuses to be defined by sales figures.
Following his posts, fans rallied to support Kevin, asserting that album sales do not represent the value of music. “Numbers have never been that important, as long as it's music you and your fans love to create, that's enough,” one fan commented. Another wrote, “You are truly one of the main reasons I continue to believe there are things to look forward to in the future! Even though my mind and body have sunk, you always make me smile. Kevin, you are a beautiful light in my life.”
Another fan added, “I'm proud of you and the musician you've become, especially in this industry. You are a bright light for many, and I can't wait to see and hear more of your music and art in the future. Thank you for always being your true self.”
Despite his new album selling only 2 copies on a single day, Kevin did not succumb to sales anxiety. Instead, he used his words to convey the idea that “the value of music should not be solely determined by sales,” garnering significant support from his fanbase.
