Kwak Jung-eun Apologizes for 12-Year-Old 'In Bed' Comment About Jang Ki-ha

Korean writer and broadcaster Kwak Jung-eun (곽정은) recently issued a formal apology for a controversial remark she made 12 years ago about singer Jang Ki-ha (장기하). During a variety show appearance, Kwak had commented, "It makes you wonder what this man would be like in bed," sparking controversy and leading to years of online criticism. She has now revisited the incident, admitting she didn't realize at the time that her words could cause discomfort, and apologized for it.

On April 18, Kwak Jung-eun uploaded a new video to her personal YouTube channel, sharing her nighttime routine and pre-sleep habits. Having recently switched to a small double bed, she highlighted the benefits of an adjustable bed and showcased her typical nightly routine.

Unexpectedly, in a bonus clip at the end of the video, she suddenly addressed why the word "bed" holds special significance for her. Kwak stated, "Today, I talked a lot about beds, but for me, the word 'bed' has a very special meaning. Many people probably know why. Twelve years ago, I was on a variety show, and I said about a male celebrity, 'This is a man who makes you wonder what he would be like in bed.'"

She revealed that her comments at the time led to extensive media coverage and a flood of critical remarks. "Many people commented asking me how I could say such a thing?" she recalled. Reflecting on her 2014 variety show appearance, Kwak had discussed Jang Ki-ha, who was a guest on the show, saying, "When he sits quietly, he seems reserved, but once he starts singing, a very strong energy erupts. So, you can't help but imagine what this man would be like in bed." This remark caused considerable controversy at the time, and the "bed comment" has frequently been brought up by netizens over the years.
