Korean writer and broadcaster Kwak Jung-eun (곽정은) recently issued a formal apology for a controversial remark she made 12 years ago about singer Jang Ki-ha (장기하). During a variety show appearance, Kwak had commented, "It makes you wonder what this man would be like in bed," sparking controversy and leading to years of online criticism. She has now revisited the incident, admitting she didn't realize at the time that her words could cause discomfort, and apologized for it.
On April 18, Kwak Jung-eun uploaded a new video to her personal YouTube channel, sharing her nighttime routine and pre-sleep habits. Having recently switched to a small double bed, she highlighted the benefits of an adjustable bed and showcased her typical nightly routine.
Unexpectedly, in a bonus clip at the end of the video, she suddenly addressed why the word "bed" holds special significance for her. Kwak stated, "Today, I talked a lot about beds, but for me, the word 'bed' has a very special meaning. Many people probably know why. Twelve years ago, I was on a variety show, and I said about a male celebrity, 'This is a man who makes you wonder what he would be like in bed.'"
She revealed that her comments at the time led to extensive media coverage and a flood of critical remarks. "Many people commented asking me how I could say such a thing?" she recalled. Reflecting on her 2014 variety show appearance, Kwak had discussed Jang Ki-ha, who was a guest on the show, saying, "When he sits quietly, he seems reserved, but once he starts singing, a very strong energy erupts. So, you can't help but imagine what this man would be like in bed." This remark caused considerable controversy at the time, and the "bed comment" has frequently been brought up by netizens over the years.
Twelve years later, Kwak Jung-eun is now directly addressing the past controversy. She explained that at the time, she had been working as a journalist for about 13 years, mostly in magazines, and frequently wrote about sex-related topics. Therefore, she wasn't fully aware of the differences in expression between print media and television programs.
She admitted, "Some expressions that are acceptable in magazines might not be accepted on television programs, where more people are watching, and could even make people uncomfortable. I didn't think about that at the time." Kwak also stated that regardless of her original intention, when something is said publicly, the context and situation must be considered. "As someone who speaks publicly, I later realized that it's my responsibility to carefully check these things."
She concluded by formally apologizing to those affected by her words. "Even though it's late, I want to offer my deepest apologies to anyone who felt uncomfortable because of my expression at the time," she said, bowing her head in apology.
Furthermore, Kwak Jung-eun mentioned that even now, some people comment on her social media, asking in return, "What would this woman be like in bed?" To this, she responded, "Life is really too short to keep hating someone over something someone said on a variety show 12 years ago." She urged netizens to let go of their past anger, saying, "I hope everyone can calm down now, and I would be very grateful if you would also be willing to listen to the various things I share now."
Jang Ki-ha debuted in 2008 as the lead vocalist of the band Kiha & The Faces. After the band disbanded in 2018, he has continued his career as a solo artist.
Notably, Jang Ki-ha's most high-profile relationship was his public romance with IU (아이유) from 2013 to 2017. The two met through a radio program and, despite an 11-year age difference, developed feelings due to their shared musical interests. After approximately four years of dating, they announced their breakup in January 2017, citing reasons such as their busy schedules.
Years later, Jang Ki-ha's romantic life once again garnered attention. In June of this year, it was reported that he had been quietly dating rising actress Yoon Ka-i (윤가이), 18 years his junior, for over two years. The two reportedly became acquainted while working together on SNL Korea, where Jang Ki-ha was the host and Yoon Ka-i was a regular cast member. Their relationship developed after spending extended time together on the show.
