IVE's Jang Won-young Accused of Snubbing Junior, Sparks Online Debate

Jang Won-young (장원영), a member of popular K-pop girl group IVE (아이브), is once again at the center of a controversy. Previously scrutinized for her every move, she is now being questioned for her perceived 'arrogant attitude' after an interaction with Rada (라다) from the new girl group A2O LITE (에이투오 라이트), with some even labeling her as 'condescending.' However, many netizens have come to her defense, arguing that her reaction was appropriate and stating, "She didn't do anything wrong!"

Recently, IVE appeared on the Korean music program M! Countdown. The nominees for that week's top spot included NCT WISH and A2O LITE. A2O LITE ultimately secured their third music show win since their debut. During their acceptance speech, member Rada bowed to Jang Won-young, who was standing nearby. Jang Won-young responded with a nod and clapped to congratulate the group as they received their award.

Unexpectedly, this brief interaction sparked a heated debate online. Some netizens argued that Rada had proactively bowed to her senior, yet Jang Won-young's response seemed cold. Some even questioned if she was deliberately maintaining an aloof image. One user sarcastically commented, "Is Jang Won-young really that arrogant? Does she think she doesn't need to bow to anyone? LOL!" Others expressed confusion, asking, "Why did Jang Won-young look at her like that?" and "She greeted her so warmly, but Jang Won-young didn't even acknowledge her?"

However, another group of netizens dismissed these criticisms as an overreaction and defended Jang Won-young. Some pointed out that Jang Won-young debuted in 2018, making her a senior with significantly more experience than Rada, who was born in 2011 and debuted recently. They argued that as a senior, her nod and applause already demonstrated basic courtesy, and there was no need to demand a more elaborate response from her.

Others directly stated, "Now some people are demanding Jang Won-young bow 180 degrees to this cute junior who just debuted? She debuted 8 years ago! Jang Won-young clearly smiled and clapped to congratulate her, and that's enough. Being a senior doesn't mean you have to do something special every time you meet a rookie." Fans also emphasized that it was a brief interaction and there was no reason to launch attacks over it.

Furthermore, some netizens urged the public to stop spreading misinformation based on short video clips, stating, "It was just a simple interaction, there's no reason to spread hate. Jang Won-young didn't do anything wrong, and neither of them should be treated this way." Some even declared that they would block accounts that continued to attack either idol, hoping for respect and goodwill.

In the Korean entertainment industry, senior-junior etiquette is highly valued, and bowing as a greeting is a common social practice. However, individual responses vary and often become a focal point for netizens' discussions. This time, Jang Won-young's simple nod and applause being questioned has once again sparked debate over whether idols' actions are being overly scrutinized. Netizens remain divided on whether her attitude was cold or simply a normal interaction.
