Olive Young's US Debut: Can K-Beauty's 'Treatment & Regeneration' Tech Reshape the Global Market?
K-Beauty is reaching a new turning point in the United States, the world's largest cosmetics market. With the combined power of 'treatment and regeneration' technology from domestic pharmaceutical bio companies and the opening of Olive Young's first US store, K-Beauty's global expansion is truly taking off.
As the Chinese market, once a major export destination for K-Beauty, contracted due to 'patriotic consumption' trends and stricter regulations, Korean companies have increasingly focused on the US market as a new key strategic hub. Notably, pharmaceutical bio companies are driving this trend, aiming to capture the local demand for high-performance skincare and secure stable cash flow compared to new drug development. According to an EBN report, active movements from K-pharmaceutical bio companies were observed at 'Olive Young Festa LA 2026' in Los Angeles this past August, where Hugel's 'WELLAGE' booth was prominently featured.
CJ Olive Young officially entered the US market on May 29, opening 'OLIVE YOUNG Pasadena' on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California. As reported by Chosun Daily, the store is a large, single-story standalone location spanning 803㎡ (approximately 243 pyeong), situated in an upscale lifestyle shopping district alongside major brands like the Apple Store and Lululemon. On the same day, an exclusive US online mall was also launched. The plan is to leverage Olive Young's extensive online and offline platform experience in the US market, developing it into a central hub to support the global growth of K-Beauty and K-Wellness brands.
K-Beauty's growth is clearly evident in the numbers. According to a report by Hankyung, in the first half of this year, South Korea's cosmetics export value reached $7 billion (approximately 9.6 trillion KRW), a 27.3% increase year-over-year, setting a new record for the first half of any year. Notably, exports to the US saw a significant surge, driving this overall growth.
At the core of this growth engine are derma-cosmetic brands from domestic pharmaceutical bio companies, which emphasize 'treatment and regeneration.' These companies employ a strategy of integrating their unique bio-technology into cosmetics to meet the local demand for high-performance skincare. EBN analyzes that pharmaceutical bio companies are looking beyond Amazon to enter large offline channels. Olive Young is also keeping pace with this trend by expanding its derma-exclusive sections, including 'Advanced Derma Beauty Consulting.'
According to the '2026 F/W Beauty Trend Report' released on September 2, NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), which is involved in cellular energy production, is at the forefront of anti-aging care. This is closely related to Skin Longevity, a key concept in this year's beauty market, focusing on extending skin health and youthfulness.
NAD+ skincare claims to replenish NAD+, which decreases with aging, thereby strengthening skin elasticity and barrier function, and improving wrinkles and skin tone. The rush by pharmaceutical companies and major beauty brands, both domestic and international, to introduce derma skincare also reflects the market's high expectations for this scientific approach and functional ingredients. The report predicts that products combining skin improvement with adherence, such as skincare-based foundations containing moisturizing serum ingredients or thinly adhering skin-fit formulas, will garner significant attention.
K-Beauty is now moving beyond a simple trend, actively reshaping the US market landscape with its scientific technology and innovative distribution strategies. The combination of 'treatment and regeneration'-based derma beauty and the 'Skin Longevity' trend appears to be a powerful arsenal that will drive K-Beauty's sustained growth in the global beauty market.
