Park So-dam Reveals Lee Jeong-eun's Midnight Support During Cancer Battle: "I'll Be Good to Her My Whole Life"
Acclaimed actress Park So-dam (박소담) debuted in 2013 with the film No More, No Less. She gained recognition through the drama Beautiful Mind and built a strong filmography with works like Madam Bwang, The Silenced, Veteran, The Throne, and The Priests. In 2019, she achieved global fame for her role as Kim Ki-jung, the fake art therapist living in a semi-basement, in Bong Joon-ho's Parasite. Her natural yet powerful performance left a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.
However, at the peak of her career, Park was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer at age 31. She revealed in an interview that the diagnosis caused immense physical and mental stress. Her voice also changed, leading her to question if she could continue acting and even contemplate retirement. After three years of treatment and recovery, she officially returned to the screen with the film Phantom.
On May 27, during the production press conference for the film Gyeongju Journey, Park spoke emotionally about the meticulous care she received from her Parasite co-star Lee Jeong-eun (이정은) during her cancer recovery. She shared that Lee not only cared for her like a mother but even rushed to her home in the early hours of the morning just to talk and listen to her pour out her heart. Deeply moved, Park exclaimed, "I will be good to her my whole life."
Gyeongju Journey tells the story of four mothers who embark on a path of revenge eight years after their youngest daughter, Gyeongju, never returned from a graduation trip. Lee Jeong-eun plays Ok-sil, a mother who lost her youngest daughter and waited eight years for revenge, while Park So-dam portrays her second daughter, Young-joo.
The two actresses, who previously worked together on Parasite, are reuniting after several years, this time portraying a mother and daughter. Lee Jeong-eun chuckled as she recalled filming Parasite, saying, "Every time I saw Park So-dam, I couldn't help but want to hit her because she kept trying to kick me out of the house." Her playful remark drew laughter from the audience.
