K-pop girl group Red Velvet (레드벨벳), often dubbed 'Summer Queens,' is gearing up for their official comeback with the brand new mini album, 'Velvet Summer.' This release marks their first full-group album in two years and two months since 'Cosmic' in June 2024, and their first summer comeback in two years, generating immense anticipation among fans.
Here are three key highlights of Red Velvet's upcoming return.
1. The 'Summer Queens' Are Back with a More Mature Vibe
Red Velvet solidified their status as 'Summer Queens' with numerous iconic summer hits, including 'Red Flavor,' 'Power Up,' 'Umpah Umpah,' and 'Queendom.'
This time, their new title track, 'Surfin' Boy,' departs from their previous bright and lively summer style. It blends laid-back Bossa Nova guitar, reggae rhythms, and house music elements to create a more mature and relaxed summer atmosphere.
In addition to Red Velvet's signature dreamy and refreshing harmonies, member Joy (조이) independently penned the lyrics, infusing the song with genuine emotion and a distinct summer feel.
2. Star-Studded Production Team with Two Tracks Penned by Joy
The new album 'Velvet Summer' features five tracks, all centered around the theme of 'summer.' It showcases Red Velvet's broad musical versatility, incorporating diverse genres such as Bossa Nova, Reggae, Dance, classical, and acoustic.
Joy not only wrote the lyrics for the title track 'Surfin' Boy' but also for the B-side track 'Hawaii,' demonstrating her continuously evolving songwriting skills.
Furthermore, SM Entertainment's ace producer Kenzie, who crafted Red Velvet's representative hits like 'Red Flavor,' 'Peek-A-Boo,' and 'Psycho,' contributed to the lyrics and composition of the B-side track 'Hot Girls Cold Vibe.'
Long-time collaborator Hwang Hyun (황현) and renowned lyricist Jo Yoon-kyung (조윤경) also participated in the production of 'Orchestra' and 'Hula Hoop,' respectively. This star-studded creative lineup has heightened expectations for the album's overall quality.
3. Pre-Comeback Fan-Con Sells Out Instantly
Before the official album release, Red Velvet will hold their '2026 Red Velvet FAN-CON' on August 1st and 2nd at Korea University's Hwajeong Gymnasium in Seoul, offering an early meeting with fans.
As this marks Red Velvet's first full-group performance in a long time, tickets for the originally scheduled two shows sold out immediately upon release. Consequently, the agency promptly added an extra show, which also sold out rapidly, demonstrating their immense popularity.
Notably, the stage for the title track 'Surfin' Boy' will be unveiled for the first time at the FAN-CON, further exciting fans.
Meanwhile, Red Velvet will host a comeback countdown live broadcast on August 3rd at 5 PM KST via their official YouTube and TikTok channels. During the broadcast, they will share behind-the-scenes stories from the new album and celebrate the official release of 'Velvet Summer' with global fans.
