Wife Dies from Maggot Infestation, Sepsis; South Korean Soldier Husband Sentenced to 30 Years
South Korean broadcaster JTBC reported on June 3 about a shocking case involving a military officer in his 30s. He was accused of long-term neglect of his wife, leading to her body being consumed by maggots before she ultimately died from sepsis. A court has sentenced the man to 30 years in prison for murder.

According to reports, the man, identified as 'A,' is an active-duty military officer. On November 17 last year, A called emergency services, claiming his wife, 'B,' was disoriented and semi-conscious, requiring urgent medical attention.
However, upon arrival, paramedics were met with a horrific scene. B was found sitting in a chair, covered by a blanket, but her entire body was soiled with excrement and filth. She was rushed to the hospital but died the following day from sepsis.

A paramedic involved in the rescue previously told the SBS program 'Unanswered Questions' that when they found B, she was almost entirely covered in feces, with "tens of thousands of maggots" wriggling across her body.
An emergency physician who testified in court also noted that medical staff continuously rinsed the wounds with saline solution, but maggots kept emerging from within. Due to the inability to completely remove all maggots, some wounds had to be bandaged without being fully cleaned.

Regarding his wife's long-term decaying condition, A claimed he had not noticed any foul odor for several months because their home constantly used air fresheners. However, multiple doctors refuted this claim, stating that when B was brought into the examination room, the entire space was filled with a putrid smell akin to a decomposing body, making it impossible not to notice.
In court, a forensic pathologist from the National Forensic Service (NFS) also testified that in their 15-year career, this was only the second case they had seen of maggots infesting a living human body, indicating the extreme rarity of the case.
The autopsy results further revealed multiple rib fractures sustained by the deceased during her lifetime. While the forensic pathologist suggested some fractures might be related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the possibility of violent assault could not be ruled out. Additionally, several bruises were found on the deceased's arms and chest. The victim's family suspects B suffered long-term domestic violence and abuse.
The autopsy report indicated approximately 7.4 liters of fluid accumulated in B's abdominal cavity, and her heart weighed 620 grams, more than double the normal adult heart weight. Multiple lesions of necrotic skin tissue were also found on her neck, sides of the waist, and tailbone. The forensic pathologist ultimately determined the cause of death to be "sepsis caused by infection."
The post-incident investigation revealed that A's long-term neglect of his wife led to her gradual loss of basic living and bodily functions, ultimately resulting in her death. Investigators noted that B had been in a semi-comatose state for an extended period, which dulled her perception of the pain caused by her body's gradual decay.
After being charged with murder, A denied all accusations, claiming he was unaware of his wife's severe condition and that she herself refused treatment. However, the court did not accept his claims.
During the trial, it was also revealed that A was heavily in debt. Prosecutors suspect a possible connection between his financial problems and the alleged abuse of the deceased, and this aspect is currently a key focus of the investigation.
A's emotionless demeanor throughout the trial and his lack of remorse deeply angered the victim's family. At one point during the hearing, a family member attempted to rush toward the defendant but was timely restrained by bailiffs and other personnel, preventing further conflict.
The military court ultimately ruled that A should have foreseen that prolonged neglect of his wife in such a state would likely lead to death, thus meeting the criteria for "murderous intent." The court sentenced A to 30 years in prison.
However, the victim's family believes the sentence is too lenient and does not reflect the severity of the case. It is understood that military prosecutors also intend to appeal, arguing for a harsher penalty for A.
After the case came to light, it quickly garnered global attention and outrage on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Many described it as one of the most horrifying cases they had ever seen and criticized the 30-year sentence as insufficient for the gravity of the crime.

目前被點名的相關作品,包括《Project Hail Mary》以及《Spider-Man: Brand New Day》等新片,也因此再度掀起討論。
