Are NMIXX's million album sales all fake? The internet is raising four major doubts!
2023-07-17
In recent years, in the KPOP scene, it has become quite common to observe groups selling over a million albums. Whether it is the first-week sales (initial sales) or the total sales volume, reaching the milestone of one million sales serves as a testament to the group's popularity.
When it comes to groups that have sold over a million albums, it's not just the already established powerful groups or the ones with significant popularity overseas. Even the recent fourth-generation female groups and limited groups are making remarkable progress. Rising towards the ranks of million-seller female groups, successful acts like IVE, aespa, NewJeans, and LE SSERAFIM are making their mark in the KPOP scene.
However, the fourth-generation girl group, NMIXX, which made a comeback last week, is currently facing suspicion from Korean netizens regarding possible chart manipulation, as their album sales are about to reach one million. Accusations of potential repurchasing have triggered widespread discussions and debates within the KPOP community.
Netizens posted on a South Korean forum that NMIXX, who made their comeback last Tuesday (11th), had already sold 973,000 albums by last Friday (14th), achieving this impressive figure in less than a week. It is expected that they will surpass one million in sales before the first week's sales are officially tallied.
However, some of these netizens expressed doubts about NMIXX's album sales, raising suspicions about various points and even questioning the possibility of data inflation or falsification. These concerns have sparked discussions and debates among KPOP fans and the public.
The netizen pointed out that based on the recent records of their label-mates TWICE and ITZY, whose first-week sales were approximately 650k and 630k copies, respectively, it seems unclear how NMIXX, who is less well-known, managed to achieve a sales volume of 970k copies in just four days. Additionally, the netizen mentioned that in comparison to other fourth-generation girl groups with strong sales outputs in Korea and China, NMIXX does not show the same high sales figures. Even when considering sales in China and Japan, NMIXX's numbers are still lower than those of other million-selling girl groups.
The netizen further elaborated on NMIXX's largest fan site 'Haewon-ba', stating that despite a 20k increase in Chinese pre-orders from the previous count, the overall Chinese orders are conservatively estimated to be around 150k-200k copies. This estimate contradicts the figure of 400k-500k copies claimed by some fans, leaving the netizen puzzled as to where this inflated number came from.
Furthermore, the netizen highlighted that despite JYP's active efforts to promote NMIXX in the international market, the group did not show significant progress on the Billboard 200 chart. Even the showcase movie that was screened in the USA did not achieve strong sales. Adding to this, NMIXX's music performance did not show improvement, and the figures on Spotify in countries other than South Korea and Japan indicated a clear setback, with their songs only managing to enter the top 200 rankings. These factors have raised suspicions among netizens regarding the legitimacy of NMIXX's claimed album sales and overall popularity.
Due to this comeback, there is no significant progress in various data metrics, except for the album sales figures, which are surprisingly outstanding, almost reaching one million. This has led many netizens to become suspicious and express their doubts, stating, "Looking at the first-week sales, it does appear like a top-tier girl group, but all other data remains at a mid-tier level, which is quite strange." "Honestly, there are plenty of male groups with weak digital performance but still manage to sell well. However, in the case of NMIXX, none of their data shows any improvement; their Spotify, concert attendances, and video views are all lacking, which makes it stand out even more." "Even though it seems unlikely that JYP would repurchase, I'm more curious about who actually bought the albums."
The unusual disparity between NMIXX's remarkable album sales and their relatively lackluster performance in other metrics has raised questions among netizens, leaving them puzzled about the situation.
However, there were also some netizens who argued, "Isn't it already strange that fourth-generation groups achieve million sales? It's not just NMIXX," "If NMIXX's million sales are questionable, then the sales figures of other fourth-generation groups should be scrutinized too," "I've been skeptical about million sales for a while now, not just for NMIXX kkk." The reactions regarding this issue are indeed polarized, with differing opinions and views among netizens.
