Actress Lee Hwi-hyang Recalls Early Marriage to Gang Boss, His Support for Her Return to Acting
Veteran South Korean actress Lee Hwi-hyang (이휘향) recently opened up about her love story with her late husband, Kim Doo-jo, who was 19 years her senior and had a past linked to organized crime. She revealed that she married just six months after her debut, putting her acting career on hold, and only returned to the stage with her husband's full support.
On August 22, Lee Hwi-hyang appeared on MBN's program “Kim Ju-ha's Day & Night,” where she recounted her journey from entering the entertainment industry to getting married and eventually returning to acting. She shared that she was an introverted student until she joined a drama club in high school and began performing in plays, discovering a completely different side of herself.
While attending Seoul Institute of the Arts, she participated in MBC's “Miss MBC” artist selection contest, held to commemorate the broadcasting station's 20th anniversary, where she ultimately won second place. Lee Hwi-hyang recalled that her family's financial situation was difficult at the time, and she was initially reluctant to join the contest, believing that “stage actors are true actors.” She said, “I wasn't mature enough for acting back then, thinking 'What kind of actor?' I really didn't want to participate, but the thought of money swayed me. In the end, I received 1 million won in prize money.”
Just two months after winning second place in “Miss MBC,” Lee Hwi-hyang was cast as a female police officer in the drama “Chief Investigator.” Unexpectedly, about six months into her role, she married Kim Doo-jo, who was 19 years her senior, and temporarily left the entertainment industry.
Discussing why she so decisively gave up her acting career at the time, she stated that she always believed “actors on stage are true actors,” which led her to choose marriage. Reflecting on her married life, she emotionally remarked, “A woman's face, as she lives, reveals everything. A woman's face cannot hide anything; just look at my face.” Her words conveyed happy memories of that marriage.
