GRID Entertainment Draws Backlash After 6-Month Trainee Project Ends Without Debut

K氏鄉民8/19/2026 1 min read

South Korean entertainment agency GRID Entertainment has come under scrutiny over a trainee project that ended in controversy. The company spent about 6 months producing the pre-debut program Idol Till I Die, showing its trainees working toward debut and giving fans time to grow attached to the members. But in the final episode, the agency abruptly announced they would “not debut,” leaving longtime viewers devastated and prompting some to accuse the company of publicly humiliating the trainees.

GRID Entertainment recently launched the pre-debut reality project to document the effort and training its trainees put in as they prepared for an official debut. As the show aired, fans followed the members’ growth and formed a strong emotional connection with them.

After the final episode aired, however, the story took a jarring turn. At the end of the video, the company announced that because the trainees had not yet met its debut standards, the project would come to an end. The agency said that while it saw potential in the members, it did not believe they were ready to make an official debut at this stage.

The company also left the decision to the members, allowing them to choose whether to stay with the agency for further training and wait for another chance to debut in the future.

After the news spread, many fans said they were heartbroken. They said they had followed the trainees throughout the process and had already become attached to the members, only to be told they “could not debut.”

One fan commented, “You put these kids under so much psychological pressure, but they really did so well. They put in an unimaginable amount of effort. I believe that with their hard work, there will be a good result in the end. I have always believed in these kids, but since the company gave them hope all along, it should take responsibility for that hope.”

Another said they cried while watching the final episode: “I really had become attached to this group. I know how cruel this industry is, but I truly believed in them. They clearly have the ability to accomplish great things. I hope they don’t give up on their dreams, and I hope all 6 of them can debut together in the end.”

Some users also drew comparisons to past controversies involving other trainee projects. One wrote, “This is basically Trainee A all over again. It’s really heartbreaking.” Another reacted in disbelief, saying, “GRID, are you kidding me right now?”

Fans also criticized the show’s handling of the announcement. One person said, “I feel like even the show’s opening music is about to become a source of trauma now.” Another wrote, “I hope all 6 of them can debut! The final episode was really too misleading.”

Related screenshots also spread widely on X, further fueling discussion of the incident.

According to reports, GRID’s trainees sought to make their official debut through the 6-month debut project Idol Till I Die, but ultimately did not form a group because they failed to meet the company’s expectations. Although the company has given the members the option to remain with the agency and continue training, it is still unclear what decision each member has made.

It is not uncommon in South Korea’s entertainment industry for trainees’ debuts to be delayed because they have not yet met debut standards. The core of this controversy, however, is that the company chose to announce the project’s termination in the “final episode” of a show that publicly followed the trainees’ path toward debut, a move many fans saw as especially harsh. One user wrote bluntly, “I now believe the CEO basically made this show into a ritual to humiliate these poor trainees.”

Another user said, “If the staff thought they weren’t ready to debut, I can understand that. But announcing it in the final episode of a pre-debut show was really too cruel and completely unnecessary.”
