GRID Entertainment Draws Backlash After 6-Month Trainee Project Ends Without Debut
South Korean entertainment agency GRID Entertainment has come under scrutiny over a trainee project that ended in controversy. The company spent about 6 months producing the pre-debut program Idol Till I Die, showing its trainees working toward debut and giving fans time to grow attached to the members. But in the final episode, the agency abruptly announced they would “not debut,” leaving longtime viewers devastated and prompting some to accuse the company of publicly humiliating the trainees.
GRID Entertainment recently launched the pre-debut reality project to document the effort and training its trainees put in as they prepared for an official debut. As the show aired, fans followed the members’ growth and formed a strong emotional connection with them.
After the final episode aired, however, the story took a jarring turn. At the end of the video, the company announced that because the trainees had not yet met its debut standards, the project would come to an end. The agency said that while it saw potential in the members, it did not believe they were ready to make an official debut at this stage.
The company also left the decision to the members, allowing them to choose whether to stay with the agency for further training and wait for another chance to debut in the future.
After the news spread, many fans said they were heartbroken. They said they had followed the trainees throughout the process and had already become attached to the members, only to be told they “could not debut.”
One fan commented, “You put these kids under so much psychological pressure, but they really did so well. They put in an unimaginable amount of effort. I believe that with their hard work, there will be a good result in the end. I have always believed in these kids, but since the company gave them hope all along, it should take responsibility for that hope.”
