Trot Singer Haru Overcomes Mother's Death, Hardship to Launch Asia Tour in Taiwan

江南美人8/14/2026 1 min read

Haru (하루), a rising star dubbed the "Prince of Trot," was once a trainee under HYBE, the agency behind BTS. He gained recognition for his stable vocal abilities, notably becoming the youngest champion in the "King of Kings" special of KBS's Morning Plaza – Challenge! Dream Stage in 2025, and later securing second place on MBN's Nameless Legend. Now, he is poised to launch his global activities, starting with Taiwan as his gateway to the overseas market, followed by expansion into Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, and other Asian territories.

Before becoming the acclaimed "Prince of Trot," Haru endured a profoundly difficult period in his life. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised solely by his mother. When his mother was diagnosed with cancer, her weight plummeted from approximately 60 kg to just 38 kg. Witnessing her deteriorating condition was heartbreaking for Haru, who was only 19 at the time. He ultimately watched his mother succumb to cancer, plunging him into a deep personal crisis.

To help cover medical expenses and living costs, Haru began working various jobs while still in high school, taking almost any opportunity to earn money. He worked at a tonkatsu restaurant, sorted and moved heavy packages at a Coupang logistics center, and even took on short-term hotel gigs, enduring a challenging lifestyle.

Haru also had a chance to become an idol trainee during his pursuit of a music career. He reportedly caught the attention of HYBE, BTS's agency, and had the opportunity to join as a trainee. However, his mother wished for him to find a stable job first. Haru chose to follow her advice, working to improve himself while waiting for a future opportunity to be recognized.

Yoo In-na Praises Jung Hae-in's True Self After 8 Months of Observation: "He's the Real Deal"

Actor Jung Hae-in recently appeared on Yoo In-na's YouTube channel, where she shared her observations of his consistent, kind, and considerate personality, leaving him blushing. She noted that his private persona is identical to his public image, even after months of working together.

It wasn't until his mother's passing, when she left him with the words, "Go pursue your dreams, walk your own path," that Haru truly resolved to bravely embark on his journey as a singer. He later joined a trot boy group and officially debuted as a member of ANEX in April 2024. After the group's activities concluded, he didn't abandon his musical dreams but instead transitioned to audition programs, where his consistent vocal prowess led him to victory, including an impressive five-win streak.

In the final "King of Kings" showdown, Haru defeated several veteran singers who had debuted years earlier, rising from an unknown newcomer to earn the moniker "Prince of Trot."

Recently, Haru appeared on MBN's program Kim Ju-ha's Day & Night, where he spoke for the first time about the arduous period he endured after his mother's cancer diagnosis, as he struggled to make ends meet.

Haru revealed that his mother began cancer treatment when he was in high school. At the time, he had to balance his studies with finding ways to earn money for household expenses. Recalling that period, he admitted, "I needed money back then, so I had to do any job I could get, no matter what it was."

After his mother's death, Haru suddenly had to shoulder all responsibilities alone, from handling funeral arrangements and various administrative procedures to maintaining daily life. "There were so many things to sort out, and a huge amount of tasks to deal with during the day, so I had no choice but to start looking for night jobs," Haru disclosed.

Consequently, he began working nights at a pub, spending his days managing various affairs and his nights earning money. Although he was physically exhausted every day, Haru found the true difficulty lay in the immense void left by his mother's passing.

He had lived with his mother in Seoul for 10 years, and after her death, the home once filled with their memories was empty except for him. Haru confessed that he felt like he "couldn't hold on much longer" and decided to move out of their shared residence after just three months. "Being alone at home, I felt suffocated, it was unbearable," he recalled.

To temporarily escape the pain of losing his mother, Haru deliberately kept himself so busy that he had no time to think. He explained, "I think I chose those kinds of jobs because after doing extremely tough work at night, I could come home in the morning and just collapse into sleep."

For Haru at that time, physical exhaustion became a way to escape psychological distress. Even in his darkest moments, he didn't give up working, eventually managing an entire store on his own, demonstrating a remarkable sense of responsibility that surprised those around him.

During the program, a colleague who appeared with Haru was moved to tears upon learning of his past, stating they had no idea he had endured such a difficult life. Haru has always presented a vibrant image as a singer to the public, but behind the spotlight, he carried a painful history rarely shared with outsiders.

Despite the lows of losing his mother, living alone, and struggling for survival, Haru never gave up singing. Now, he stands on stage once more, building his popularity step by step with his voice, allowing past hardships to fuel his pursuit of dreams. Haru stated, "After my mother left, I truly felt lost, but no matter what, I had to live on, and I wanted to sing again." He added that he would continue to work hard, hoping to present a better version of himself on stage.

Having risen from his life's lowest point, Haru is not only making a name for himself in the Korean trot scene but is also set to enter the Asian market, beginning with Taiwan. This journey makes every stage he now graces feel even more hard-won.
