Jennie's Summer Sonic Performance Draws Criticism After Lollapalooza 'Karaoke' Backlash

K氏鄉民8/15/2026 1 min read

BLACKPINK member Jennie (김제니) has continued to generate buzz with her recent solo appearances at major international music festivals. She recently made history as the first K-pop female solo artist to headline the main stage at Lollapalooza Chicago. However, following her performance, her live vocal abilities drew skepticism from some online users, with one U.S. media outlet sarcastically describing the entire show as "a luxurious karaoke session."

Jennie is once again at the center of a live performance debate. She recently took the stage as a headliner at Japan's Summer Sonic 2026 festival in Tokyo, delivering an approximately one-hour set. Her live vocals and sound quality during her performance of "One of the Girls" became a focal point for online users, with clips of the performance quickly garnering both positive and negative reactions across social media platforms.

On Aug. 14, Jennie appeared on the Summer Sonic 2026 stage in Tokyo as the day's headlining act, performing for about an hour. Her set included "One of the Girls," a track from the soundtrack of the HBO series The Idol, in which she also appeared. As "One of the Girls" is considered more vocally demanding than some of her other songs, Jennie's live rendition quickly sparked extensive discussion among online users.

Many fans praised Jennie's performance, noting that her true voice was clearly audible and distinct from the backing track, with some even commending her for showing improved live skills.

One fan commented, "Jennie's live vocals have always been good." Others enthusiastically called her Summer Sonic performance "truly amazing," specifically praising the sound engineering team for excellent audio quality, stating, "You can clearly hear Jennie's live vocals, and they blend naturally with the backing track."

However, another segment of online users offered harsh criticism, suggesting that Jennie heavily relied on "Live Auto-Tune" during the performance and questioning her vocal technique.

Some online users pointed out that occasional pitch inaccuracies during high notes are not uncommon for singers. However, they expressed disappointment with Jennie's live performance, arguing that she seemed to have pitch issues throughout a song that is relatively lower in vocal range.

Skeptics went as far as to comment, "Jennie needs to take singing lessons," and sarcastically remarked, "Didn't they say the mic was on? Maybe they should just turn it off."

Indeed, Jennie's live vocal performances on recent international stages have consistently drawn polarized opinions. With her Summer Sonic performance now reigniting controversy, coupled with some criticism directed at her latest music releases, the discussions surrounding her artistry continue to intensify.
