The Legacy of the Original 'M' and the Remake Production Team

The original drama 'M,' which aired on MBC (a major South Korean broadcasting company) in 1994, was a legendary horror mystery that surpassed 50% viewership, becoming a cultural phenomenon and catapulting lead actress Shim Eunha (심은하) to stardom. This new TVING remake, 'M – Reboot,' aims to reinterpret the original's acclaimed legacy with a modern sensibility.

The remake will be directed by Lim Dae-woong (임대웅) PD, known for the drama 'Flex x Cop 2,' and who also has extensive experience directing horror films such as 'House of the Disappeared' and 'Horror Stories.' The screenplay is a collaborative effort by writers Hong Eun-mi (홍은미) and Lee Jung-eun (이정은), who previously penned 'Hidden Face' and 'Missing.'

Jung Chaeyeon and Jung Geonjoo's First Foray into Mystery Horror

Jung Chaeyeon will take on the role originally played by Shim Eunha, embodying a complex 3-in-1 character who shifts between three personalities: 'Mari,' 'M,' and 'Jenny.' Her first persona, Mari, is a ballerina raised by a strict politician father and an overbearing mother. As she prepares for an audition at a prestigious ballet school, she begins to suffer from nightmares. One day, the mysterious personality 'M' awakens within her, changing everything. She is also set to portray 'Jenny,' a secretive genius doctor from the U.S.

Jung Geonjoo steps into the role originally played by Lee Chang-hoon (이창훈), portraying 'Jiseok,' a detective who delves into the mysteries surrounding the female protagonist. Known for his quick thinking and tenacious investigative skills, Jiseok is considered an ace within his department. As he becomes entangled with Jenny and the bizarre incidents that follow her, a strange green light appears before him, forcing him to confront his own past, including an event from a night ten years ago. This drama marks the first venture into the horror genre for both lead actors.

Debate Over Adaptation Direction in Content Remakes

As remakes of classic works continue to emerge, there's been a lively discussion within the Korean content market recently regarding the direction of these adaptations. Notably, the Korean film version of 'The Intern' faced criticism for emphasizing gender conflict over generational conflict, with some arguing it portrayed men as 'enemies.'

"Why are you making men out to be enemies to this extent? I thought this movie was made to emphasize gender conflict, not generational conflict and reconciliation."

Despite such criticisms, many positive reactions to the Korean adaptation were also found on the domestic online community Theqoo, with comments like, "It seems to reflect Korean reality," and "It must be incredibly realistic."

Slated to air next year, 'M – Reboot' is poised to carry on the original's legacy while offering a fresh, modern reinterpretation through elements like Jung Chaeyeon's captivating 3-in-1 character and Jung Geonjoo's narrative of chasing the past. All eyes are on what new mysteries and messages this drama will deliver to viewers.
