KARA’s Nicole ranked No. 1 at her U.S. middle school before pursuing K-pop dream
KARA member Nicole (니콜) is widely seen by K-pop fans as one of the defining figures of the second-generation girl group era. Less known is that she was not only a popular idol onstage but also an exceptional student. She recently revealed on a program that she once ranked No. 1 in her entire middle school in the United States, drawing renewed discussion online after her academic record came to light.

For many K-pop idols, chasing a debut means entering an intense training routine in their teens and often having to choose between school and their dream. Nicole, however, managed both: She excelled academically and ultimately became a member of one of K-pop’s legendary girl groups.
Born in California, Nicole grew up in the United States and attended Keppel Elementary School and Toll Middle School in Glendale, California. During her school years, she earned strong grades and was active in extracurricular activities, including choir and drill team. She also studied violin for 4 years while continuing dance training, making her a notably well-rounded student.
Nicole previously said on a variety show that she ranked No. 1 in her entire middle school, surprising the hosts and audience. The disclosure also led many fans to discover only now that she had another side as an “academic idol.”
Despite her excellent grades, Nicole ultimately chose to pursue a career in entertainment. She recorded a video of herself singing a song by Korean singer IVY and sent it to DSP Media for an audition. After passing, she moved to South Korea with her mother and officially began life as a trainee.
Although she had to adapt to an unfamiliar environment and culture and be separated from her friends in the United States, Nicole persisted. In 2007, she officially debuted as the youngest member of KARA.
After her contract with DSP Media expired in 2014 and she left the agency, Nicole continued releasing music and expanded into acting, appearing in works including “Secret Love” and “Here He Comes.” She also has been active on major variety programs, including “King of Mask Singer,” “Video Star” and “Immortal Songs.”
In 2022, marking KARA’s 15th debut anniversary, the group released the commemorative album “Move Again” and reunited after many years, moving many fans. Since then, KARA has appeared on programs including “I Can See Your Voice” and “Just Me, KARA,” and taken part in major events such as a concert commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between South Korea and Japan, again showing the enduring appeal of the legendary second-generation girl group.
