Lee Soo-hyuk Abruptly Exits Netflix's 'The Men of the Harem' After Filming Begins
Korean actor Lee Soo-hyuk (이수혁) was slated to star in the new Netflix series 'The Men of the Harem.' However, despite the production having officially commenced filming, news suddenly emerged that he had decided to leave the cast, surprising many. Regarding the reason for the last-minute recasting, Lee Soo-hyuk's agency only stated "scheduling conflicts," adding, "Please inquire with the production company for more details."
According to Korean media reports, news of Lee Soo-hyuk's departure from 'The Men of the Harem' broke on the 19th. His sudden exit has garnered significant attention, especially since the drama had already completed its script reading and officially begun filming.
Lee Soo-hyuk's agency, People Entertainment, confirmed to Korean media outlet iMBC Entertainment, "Lee Soo-hyuk will indeed be withdrawing from 'The Men of the Harem' due to scheduling issues."

While it is not uncommon for actors to be replaced due to scheduling conflicts before a drama officially begins filming, mid-production cast changes are relatively rare. Given that 'The Men of the Harem' had already completed its script reading and started shooting, Lee Soo-hyuk's announcement has naturally sparked considerable discussion.
When pressed by media for further details, such as whether Lee Soo-hyuk had participated in the script reading or filmed any scenes, People Entertainment did not elaborate, only responding, "We cannot provide detailed information; please inquire with the production company." Production company Studio Dragon told iMBC Entertainment, "This is a project that began filming after completing the script reading. Lee Soo-hyuk withdrew due to scheduling reasons." They did not offer further details.
'The Men of the Harem' is adapted from a popular Korean web novel by the same author as 'The Remarried Empress.' The original work is beloved by many readers for its beautiful artwork and female-centric storyline. The drama is set in a palace, blending romance and fantasy elements, and follows Empress Latil as she takes multiple men into her harem to secure her throne.
The series has garnered significant attention since its casting stage, with Suzy (수지) cast as the female lead, Empress Latil. Lee Soo-hyuk was initially expected to portray one of Latil's male harem members, making his sudden withdrawal after filming began all the more unexpected.
Currently, the official production has not specified whether Lee Soo-hyuk had already filmed any scenes, nor has it announced a replacement actor for the role. Whether any previously filmed content will need to be reshot has also become a point of public interest.
News of Lee Soo-hyuk's sudden departure quickly sparked discussion on Korean online communities. With the official explanation limited to "scheduling conflicts," many netizens expressed confusion about his abrupt exit after filming had already commenced.
One netizen commented, "I heard filming had already started, so he's leaving mid-production." Another asked, "What? Wasn't he a male lead? If he leaves mid-production, will Suzy have to reshoot everything from the beginning?" A third wrote, "Leaving mid-production due to scheduling conflicts, does that reason even make sense? He must have already signed a contract; it feels like there might be other reasons." Yet another speculated, "It seems there's really something else going on; they'll probably announce it later."
Some also speculated that Lee Soo-hyuk might have raised concerns about the filming schedule that were not accommodated, while others believed, "They're only saying it's a scheduling issue publicly, but it looks like there must be other reasons."
However, some netizens also acknowledged the possibility of genuine scheduling conflicts. One user pointed out that Suzy's other project, 'Doona!' (이두나!), had an extended filming period, causing 'The Men of the Harem' to be delayed by several months from its original schedule. If Lee Soo-hyuk had other projects lined up, a conflict in his availability could indeed arise.
Regarding this, another netizen commented, "If filming was delayed and the pace was slow, he might genuinely not have been able to manage it." Others added, "I heard 'The Men of the Harem' has been filming for several months already," and "It seems 'Doona!' had additional filming after it wrapped up; could the delays really have been that severe?"
Some fans even revealed that after 'The Men of the Harem' officially began filming, Lee Soo-hyuk himself had told fans he would "also start filming soon." His sudden withdrawal now makes the situation even more surprising to the public.
Furthermore, many netizens believed Lee Soo-hyuk's appearance perfectly matched the character's description, exclaiming, "Based on the current casting, he's one of the most suitable male actors for this project," and "His withdrawal is really hard to accept."

As of now, neither Lee Soo-hyuk nor the production team has disclosed further details regarding his departure. Whether it was simply a matter of scheduling conflicts or if there are other underlying reasons remains to be clarified by future announcements.
