South Korea's entertainment industry is once again embroiled in controversy over a social media 'like.' WINNER member Song Min-ho (송민호) was recently sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, in his first trial for allegedly violating military service law. He recently posted a handwritten apology, but actor Byun Yo-han (변요한) not only liked the post but also left three heart emojis, a public show of support that unexpectedly drew heavy criticism from netizens. Byun Yo-han had recently garnered positive attention for his marriage to Girls' Generation member Tiffany Young (티파니 영) and their sweet interactions, as well as the release of his starring film, “Tazza: One-Eyed Jack.” However, a single 'like' has now plunged him into a public opinion storm.

Song Min-ho was previously accused of leaving his alternative service workplace without permission for 102 days and was indicted for allegedly violating military service law. On the first of this month, he was sentenced in his first trial to one year in prison, suspended for two years. Following the verdict, he posted a handwritten apology on his personal social media platform on the 9th, marking his first public statement in eight days.

In his post, Song Min-ho stated, “I sincerely apologize for causing many people to worry because of me. I am truly sorry for disappointing everyone.” He also admitted that his past irresponsible choices filled him with shame and regret, vowing not to evade his mistakes in the future. He promised to reflect deeply and diligently fulfill all upcoming procedures and obligations.

However, the apology post did not seem to win over Korean netizens, instead drawing significant skepticism. Some questioned whether his apology was a move to pave the way for a future comeback, leaving sarcastic comments such as: “Why the sudden apology?” “Seriously, so shameless.” “Looks like he's releasing an album.” “Seems like he wants to make a comeback.” Some even directly challenged him: “If you're apologizing, then re-enlist!”

Additionally, some netizens felt the apology came too late, stating: “Isn't it too late?” “He kept silent for almost a whole year, why apologize now of all times?” “It's been a long time since the controversy, why apologize now? Looks like he's planning an appeal and preparing for a comeback.” Others sarcastically remarked: “How long ago was that? Are you just thawing out now? You're so slow.” Some also questioned: “Did his lawyer teach him to write that letter of remorse?”

Nevertheless, some netizens brought up Song Min-ho's past health issues, including panic disorder and depression, arguing that these conditions should not be overlooked. However, they also emphasized that this does not mean the controversy he is involved in should be forgiven, nor should it serve as an excuse for his actions. The related discussions continue to rage on Korean online communities.

Amidst the heated discussion surrounding Song Min-ho's apology, sharp-eyed netizens noticed that Byun Yo-han, who has known Song Min-ho for about 10 years, not only 'liked' the post but also left three heart emojis in the comment section, openly showing support for his friend. While their long-standing friendship might suggest Byun Yo-han's action was simply from a friend's perspective, it has once again drawn public attention due to Song Min-ho's ongoing military service controversy.

realllllmino Hello, this is Song Mino.
I apologize deeply for causing many people concern.
I should have stated my position sooner, but I was too late. I apologize for making you wait for so long.
I will not avoid my foolish mistakes and will reflect on them. From now on, I will diligently fulfill the remaining procedures and duties. I will not forget this experience and keep it in my heart, and live with a more responsible attitude.
Once again, I sincerely apologize.
Sincerely, Song Mino

Some netizens believe that since Song Min-ho's issue involves the highly sensitive topic of military service, Byun Yo-han's public display of hearts could easily be interpreted as endorsing his friend, criticizing him for being inappropriate. Comments included: “He really doesn't know how to read the room,” “At least he could have kept his image by staying silent,” “Birds of a feather, indeed,” “Completely thoughtless,” and “I didn't realize he was so careless.”

Byun Yo-han, who was previously receiving significant attention for his new marriage and film release, has now unexpectedly become embroiled in controversy for liking his friend's apology post, once again stirring up public opinion in the South Korean entertainment industry over a small action on social media.
