Girls' Generation's HyoRiSu Debuts as 'Rookie Group,' Sparks On-Air Squabbles

Girls' Generation, a group with nearly two decades in the industry, is making a surprising re-debut in 2026 as a 'rookie girl group.' Comprising Kim Hyo-yeon (김효연), Kwon Yu-ri (권유리), and Choi Soo-young (최수영), the unit known as HyoRiSu (효리수) began as a fun segment on Hyo-yeon's YouTube show, Hyo’s Level Up. What started as a joke on the show quickly turned serious, leading them to prepare songs, practice choreography, and ultimately release a new single, making them this year's most unique 'super-senior rookies.'

SM Entertainment has fully committed to this project, officially launching HyoRiSu into the music scene. The trio released their first digital single, Skibidi, on August 31, featuring the title track of the same name and the B-side “Lowkey In Love.” To promote their new music, the three members have been appearing on various variety shows. On September 5, they are scheduled to appear on MBC’s Omniscient Interfering View, where they will reveal behind-the-scenes footage from their first dance practice for “Skibidi.”

The preview for the show indicates that these '20-year rookies' immediately went all out upon meeting, showing no intention of holding back. Their long-standing friendship allowed them to playfully roast each other without mercy, with their sharp remarks prompting viewers to exclaim, “They’re truly Girls’ Generation!”

During the program, Hyo-yeon initially displayed strong ambition, even jokingly stating she could “use her nose as a microphone.” However, the conversation quickly devolved into mutual teasing. When discussing the song, one member directly quipped, “The song Hyo-yeon chose doesn’t quite suit her vocal tone,” instantly creating a tense yet familiar atmosphere, showcasing the trio’s comfortable interactions after 19 years of knowing each other.

Before their official dance practice, the three even engaged in a 'part-grabbing battle' for the song. Hyo-yeon praised Soo-young’s high notes, saying she could be her “second Hyo-yeon,” but at the same time, she kept a close eye on Yu-ri’s center parts, unable to hide her ambition as both leader and main vocalist.

Beyond part distribution, the title of “Girls’ Generation’s strongest main dancer” also became a battleground for the trio. They constantly competed and teased each other, filling the practice room with non-stop laughter.

Later, the trio met with the dance crew WE DEM BOYZ, who choreographed the song, to officially tackle the challenging dance for “Skibidi.” During practice, however, Soo-young unexpectedly struggled with a move that required making a sound similar to a “goat’s bleat,” immediately becoming the target of Hyo-yeon and Yu-ri’s teasing. The two mercilessly poked fun at her, even making the choreographers laugh.

Despite their informal bickering, once they entered official practice mode, Girls’ Generation’s years of stage experience immediately shone through. Hyo-yeon, in particular, quickly mastered the complex choreography, proving her main dancer skills are still top-notch, earning admiration even from WE DEM BOYZ.
